Yuri Bashmet

Yuri Bashmet - indisputably the world’s greatest living violist.

He was born in Rostov-on-Don in 1953 and grew up in L’viv in the Ukraine.

That is why many people from L’viv argue that Yuri Bashmet was actually born in L’viv.

In L’viv Yuri Bashmet - like so many others - took up the violin at the behest of his mother, while he preferred the guitar for himself.

In the late 60-s Yuri Bashmet played guitar ina L’viv band with Yuri Sharifov (bass guitar) and Ihor Soulyga (drums). Syluga now plays in

"Moscow Virtuoso" under conduct of Vladimir Spivakov.

Since 21 February 2005 students of L’viv Music College named after Solomia Krushelnytska will be given lectures by Abram Bashmet, father of Yuri Bashmet.
